Summer Season in Washington Post

There's one error people should be aware of in the article...the free Summer Blast-Off event with the U.S. Marine Band and fireworks is listed as happening on May 25, when the show is actually on Sunday, May 27. That's one of the most popular nights of the year here and we don't want people showing up on the wrong date, so please make a note of that if you're heading out here for it.

Box Office Opening Day Festivities to Include Live Music

Tickets for most of Wolf Trap's Summer 2007 shows go on sale this Saturday, March 31 at 10am. You can get tickets that morning by calling 877-WOLFTRAP, ordering online at tickets.com, or in person at the Filene Center box office, where you can save money on service charges.

If you come out to the Filene Center to get your tickets that morning, you can catch a special acoustic set of music at 9am from a Summer 2007 Wolf Trap artist (check back here on Friday night to find out who that is), plus Starbucks will be handing out drinks and Capital Restaurants will have some free snacks as well. Cerphe from 94.7 The Globe will be broadcasting live from 9:30-11:30am and WJFK will be here providing on-air updates.

Tomorrow at noon, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts' President & CEO Terre Jones will announce a major environmental initiative and our 2007 summer season schedule from the National Press Club in downtown Washington, DC.

If one of us can get to a computer to blog something from down there, we will. Or you can also tune into the mainpage of wolftrap.org on Monday for a rundown of our summer shows; check out the Newsroom where press releases will be available detailing Wolf Trap's new environmental initiative and all aspects of the summer season; or tune into Wolf Trap Radio, where we'll be playing music by artists from the summer schedule.

Joining us at the Press Club tomorrow will be Mike Love, Lead Singer of the legendary Beach Boys and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who will also deliver a speech related to the environment.

C-SPAN will likely air the event, either live or tape delayed. We'll keep you posted on that.

-->This summer's dance and musical theater performances were announced in November and tickets are already on sale.

Based on our stats, a decent number of people landing here on the blog in the past couple days have come via Google searches for "Wolf Trap Radio." I'm guessing Marc Fisher's Washington Post column from Sunday is causing many of those searches. Thanks for stopping by and here are a few pieces of Wolf Trap Radio news...

We've added even more tracks to the Wolf Trap Radio playlist since Marc put together his article. At that time, we had about seven hours of music in our playlist on a random rotation and, with some additions to the playlist over the past couple of weeks, we now have close to thirteen hours of music in rotation. Those tracks are all in shuffle mode and highlight performances from The Barns at Wolf Trap '06-'07 season (we'll start airing music to highlight the Filene Center 2007 summer season in late March/early April).

In addition to that playlist, we currently have a couple of radio shows on the schedule as well. One features John McEuen and the other features John Eaton. You can read more about both of those programs in this blog post from last week.

In the Sunday Post, J. Freedom du Lac highlighted John Jennings and his upcoming Saturday, January 27 Barns performance in Here & Now, while Marc Fisher included Wolf Trap Radio and our podcasts in his Listener column "Arts Presenters Hope Podcasts Click With Patrons."

John Hammond's New Disc and Tour

Grammy-winning blues legend John Hammond releases a new CD next week and makes a stop at The Barns at Wolf Trap on January 31 as part of the supporting tour. The new disc, entitled "Push Comes to Shove," was produced by G. Love and features a dozen songs, five of which were written by Hammond. New Additions to Wolf Trap Radio

We've been adding more music to Wolf Trap Radio, which is currently playing a mix of songs to highlight this season's performances at The Barns at Wolf Trap.

We've also added a couple of radio programs. John McEuen visits The Barns on Wednesday, January 24 and we're currently airing a half-hour radio show that he put together. His show airs every day at 2:30pm and 7:30pm.

And we've added a program by jazz pianist John Eaton that will air on Thursdays at 1pm (beginning January 18) and then again on Saturdays at 1pm. The show features both music and commentary from Eaton and his guests, with the first installment focusing on the music of Richard Rodgers as we air the Wolf Trap Recordings release "John Eaton Presents the American Popular Song: Richard Rodgers - One Man and His Lyricists" in its entirety.

Johnny Winter and B.B. King

Here's a cool story from Johnny Winter's bio (Credit goes to Sarah Jackson here in the Communications & Marketing department for writing it up):

At a club in Beaumont in 1962, a 17-year-old Winter convinced legendary blues artist B.B. King to let him play a song for the audience. “Finally, he decided that there were enough people who wanted to hear me that, no matter if I was good or not, it would be worth it to let me on stage,” recalls Winter. “He gave me his guitar and let me play. I got a standing ovation, and he took his guitar back!”

Jon Carroll on Metro Connection

This Friday, January 5, musician Jon Carroll will be on WAMU 88.5 FM's Metro Connection. From wamu.org:

He plays piano with Mary Chapin Carpenter, wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt and Tom Jones and, as a member of the "Starland Vocal Band," recorded one of the defining hit singles of the 1970s "Afternoon Delight." Now songwriter Jon Carroll strikes out on his own with a new CD and joins us for an in-studio performance.

Jon Carroll plays The Barns at Wolf Trap on Friday, January 12. As of this posting, there are still tickets available. If you can't make that show, Jon will be back at The Barns on Saturday, January 27 to join John Jennings on stage.

With the nation celebrating the life of the late President Gerald R. Ford this seems like a good time to share this photo from Wolf Trap's archives. In the undated photo above, President Ford is pictured with Wolf Trap founder Catherine Filene Shouse (center) and an unidentified guest.

President Ford appointed Mrs. Shouse to the Commission on Presidential Scholars in 1975. Two years later, he bestowed upon her The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest United States civilian award.

NPR on a Lost Violin

The Turtle Island String Quartet played the first show in our 2006-07 Discovery Series back in October and I heard this piece during my drive home last night on NPR. Apparently, one of their members lost his violin back in April at the Billings, Montana airport and it sounds like it's recently been found, thanks to an old of friend of his and the local police. Nighthawks Live Barns Recording

Today's Washington Post Weekend section features a nice review of The Nighthawks new double-disc, "Blue Moon in Your Eye" by writer Mike Joyce. The disc was recorded live at The Barns at Wolf Trap in April 2005 and the release includes a DVD version of the full concert as well as the CD version. The Nighthawks will be back here at The Barns on Thursday, April 5, 2007.

Wolf Trap Opera Company Announces Inaugural Season of Wolf Trap Opera Studio

An eight-week summer residency program for undergraduate singers

Vienna, VA—Today, Friday, December 1, 2006, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and the Wolf Trap Opera Company proudly announced the inception of the Wolf Trap Opera Studio (WTOS) program. WTOS singers will be recruited from conservatories and other strong vocal performance programs in the northeastern United States. Singers will be chosen by audition and must demonstrate talent, operatic potential, and a stable vocal technique. They will benefit from a combination of performance opportunities and continued practical training. Many other professional development opportunities offered to this demographic are tuition-based. However, singers selected for the WTOS will be compensated for their time with lodging and a small stipend.

WTOS Singers will participate in:
• Vocal and language coaching with Wolf Trap Opera Company professional staff
• Scene preparation with the Wolf Trap Opera Company Directing Fellow
• Improvisation classes
• Movement classes
• Other professional training opportunities

WTOS Singers will be offered the following types of performance opportunities:
• Opera Scenes
• Chorus roles, if appropriate, in Operas at The Barns at Wolf Trap
• Bit parts, if appropriate, in Operas at The Barns at Wolf Trap
• Studio singers may also be given opportunities to cover larger roles at the discretion of the Artistic Administration, but such opportunities are not guaranteed.

Auditions will be held in New York on February 17 & 18, 2007 and in Vienna, VA on February 24, 2007. Studio singers will be in residence at Wolf Trap from late May through late July, 2007.

Wolf Trap Opera Studio administration will be overseen by Joshua Winograde, Artistic Administration Fellow and Wolf Trap Opera Company alumnus.

Barns News

Patrick Foster's review of Thursday night's sold out Del McCoury Band show at The Barns at Wolf Trap appeared in Saturday's Washington Post.

Tickets for several new shows at The Barns went on sale Friday morning, including a second Sonny Landreth show. So, as of this posting, if you didn't get tickets to the Saturday show before it sold out, you can still get them for the just-added Sunday afternoon show.

January brings several shows to The Barns by artists with DC area ties: Jon Carroll & Love Returns on January 12; John Eaton on January 20 for the second in his three-show series at The Barns; John Jennings & Friends on January 27; and An Evening with Last Train Home on January 28.

We also have a couple of big name actors bringing music to The Barns in early '07, with James Naughton on January 25 and Jeff Daniels on February 2.

Tune into 88.5 WAMU-FM's Metro Connection this Friday, November 24 at 1pm to hear the Grandson's, who will be in-studio to talk about their 20th anniversary as a band and their show that night at The Barns at Wolf Trap. The November 21 issue of The Connection Newspapers includes an article on the Grandsons. A review of the group's new CD, which was recorded during a show here at The Barns last year, will run in this Friday's Washington Post Weekend section.

Later that afternoon, at 3:50pm, tune into Washington Post Radio at 1500 AM, 107.7 FM, or online to hear Wolf Trap Foundation's Senior Vice President of Performing Arts & Education, Ann McKee, as she discusses Wolf Trap's upcoming Holiday Sing-A-Long. "Coachella Country"

While on Del McCoury Band's MySpace page yesterday, the May 6, 2007 Coachella date that have on their calendar jumped out at me. I didn't see anything on the Coachella website about next year's line-up being announced but then I got my answer today in a Pollstar article titled "Coachella Country." According to the article:

Goldenvoice is ready to apply its successful Coachella formula to a new country music festival next year.

Promoter Paul Tollett said the currently unnamed fest will take place May 5 - 6 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio. It follows the established Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which runs April 27 - 29."

Tollett said the country music event will include Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs, Nickel Creek, Garrison Keillor and Riders In The Sky. But that's just a sample of what's to come.

Apparently, Del McCoury Band will be part of that line-up too. They'll be here at The Barns for two shows next week and another "Couchella Country" band, Riders in the Sky, come to The Barns on Saturday, February 3. We'll have to keep an eye out to see if other '06-'07 Barns artists end up being added to the event.

As I mentioned yesterday, all of our summer 2007 musical and dance performances were announced yesterday morning and tickets for those go on sale Saturday, December 2 at 10 a.m.

I'm blown away by the fact that lawn tickets for all of the dance performances are only eight bucks. As a Wolf Trap employee I'm probably a little biased but, regardless, I think the fact that people can throw down a blanket, enjoy their own food and drinks, and catch world class performers like Paul Taylor Dance Company, Doug Varone & Dancers, Trey McIntyre Project, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for that price is pretty amazing. You could stop by our box office and buy two tickets for $16 total (no service charges if you come get them in person!), get a bottle of wine for even less than that, pack up your dinner, and you've got a less-than-$50 evening out (with dinner, drinks, and a show included) for two people in a great outdoor setting.

Washington Post Arts Blog(s)?

The Washington Post has made huge strides into the world of blogging over the last year or two, adding multiple blogs on washingtonpost.com that cover topics from politics to sports to the happenings in various parts of the region. But they've yet to add a blog that covers the arts.

The Going Out Gurus blog sometimes touches on various arts-related events, but it's overall focus is on various forms of entertainment and things to do, not all of which involve the arts.

So, I've added a Post blog that focuses solely on music, dance, film, theatre, and other art forms to my wish list. Each of these categories could provide enough material for its own blog, but just one washingtonpost.com blog covering the Washington arts world would be a nice first step.

Opera Audition Tour

Kim Witman, Wolf Trap's Director of Opera and Classical Programming, is off on a two and half week audition tour that will help determine which young singers will make up the 2007 Wolf Trap Opera Company. Here's how Kim described her trip in on her blog:

"Daily posts for the next 2.5 weeks. The audition tour starts tomorrow in Philadelphia. Then New York, Houston, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Vienna VA. 375 singers over 13 days of singing. More airplanes, rental cars, trains, taxis and hotels than I want to consider at this moment."

Comedian Richard Jeni comes to The Barns at Wolf Trap for three shows in mid-November and writer Nick Kolakowski just caught up with the comic for a piece that appears in the November issue of On Tap magazine. Jeni recently appeared in his third HBO Comedy Hour, “A Big Steaming Pile of Me,” and has been called "one of the best comics who ever lived" by Chris Rock.

With nearly 100 shows taking place every May through September at the Filene Center and nearly 100 more at The Barns from October through May, it's impossible to get a major publication here to cover every single show.

However, there are still people looking online for reviews of many of the shows that take place at Wolf Trap. A good number of the hits this blog gets through search engines come from people searching for "[insert artist name here] Wolf Trap review." The demand for reviews seems to outweigh the supply.

But, just because a major publication can't send a writer to every show doesn't mean you can't find a review of the show, thanks to the internet. After many shows, I'm able to search the blogosphere using Google Blog Search or Technorati and find fans who've posted their thoughts on a show they attended at Wolf Trap, sometimes even before a newspaper has hit the newsstands. You don't always get in-depth coverage of the band's entire set, although sometimes you do. Many times you simply get one fan's quick recap of their evening, but this can sometimes provide great perspective and, in some cases, it's being read by hundreds or thousands of people.

Here are a couple of examples from over the weekend. This fan attended Friday's show by The Avett Brothers and said "they were incredible!," while this fan was "thoroughly entertained" by Saturday's Paul Thorn show after a friend brought them as a surprise.

So, if you have a blog, keep posting about your Wolf Trap experiences and I'll keep linking to some of the ones I come across.

Holiday Sing-A-Long on Dec. 3

Believe it or not, Wolf Trap's annual Holiday Sing-A-Long is just a little over five weeks away. Taking place on Sunday, December 3 from 4-5:30pm (gates open at 3pm) at the Filene Center, the free event features the United States Marine Band, vocal groups from the Washington metro area, and approximately 7,000 audience members.

As part of this celebration of Christmas and Hanukkah through song, Wolf Trap will be collecting voluntary donations of new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. No tickets are needed. All you have to do is show up with a candle and a bell, plus a new, unwrapped toy if you’d like. Parking is free but limited, so please carpool and arrive early. There will NOT be a Metro shuttle for this event.

Grammy Winning Classical Music This Friday at The Barns at Wolf Trap

The Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet—dual winners of the 2005 GRAMMY for Best Classical Crossover Album for their collaborative release 4 + Four—perform together this Friday, October 13, at The Barns at Wolf Trap.

The show will kick off the 2006-2007 Discovery Series, Wolf Trap's annual chamber music series. Selected portions of Discovery Series shows are broadcasted on over 250 radio stations nationwide as part of Center Stage from Wolf Trap. Friday's performance also marks Founder's Day, which honors Wolf Trap's founder, Catherine Filene Shouse (1896-1994).

The International Children's Festival received a couple of mentions in today's Washington Post Weekend section, including this piece on page 55. The festival is here both Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 4pm.

Several of us from Wolf Trap got a sneak preview of performances by children from Turkey, Qater, South Korea, and Hawaii at last night's ICF Gala and I'm looking forward to catching more this weekend.

The Crooked Road

Today's Washington Post Weekend section features an extensive cover story by Richard Harrington, "Old Time Music's Crooked Road: A Tuneful Drive Through History in Southwest Virginia."

In addition to being an interesting read, the article also mentions Abington, Virginia's Barter Theatre--the official state theatre of Virginia--and their production of "Man of Constant Sorrow: The Story of the Stanley Brothers," which comes to The Barns at Wolf Trap on October 26. The play celebrates bluegrass legends Ralph and Carter Stanley and includes 20 of their classic songs.

Many people associate Wolf Trap with summer, due to the popularity of the 7,000 Filene Center. But the staff doesn't all just disappear when the warm months come to an end.

In addition to education programs that go on throughout the year and an opera company that keeps busy 12 months a year, we also have The Barns at Wolf Trap, an intimate, 382-seat indoor venue located just across the Dulles Toll Road from the Filene Center.

The Washington Post's Express ran a Weekend Pass feature yesterday on Chris Isaak and his upcoming performance at Wolf Trap, which takes place this Sunday with special guest Anna Nalick opening the show. The piece was written by Christopher Porter, who blogs at ChristoperPorter.com (a.k.a. The Suburbs Are Killing Us).

Nalick, who will make her Wolf Trap debut when she opens this show, called into the Jack Diamond Morning Show yesterday on Mix 107.3 FM and spoke with the morning crew for about 15 minutes. Get here early to catch her set...she'll go on at 8pm Sunday.
